Next

Maverick Next is a one-of-a-kind program for changemakers in the early stages of their philanthropy journey. Members join a tight-knit cohort of three to six women and co-invest in a project that advances health and reproductive rights. Members learn and travel together, join tailored engagements, and hone their leadership skills toward a life of impact.

Through [Maverick Next] and collaborating with this amazing group of women on our project in Ethiopia, I’m growing and learning so much about how to create long-lasting, meaningful impact. Gabriela Citrone

THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN PHILANTHROPISTS

Maverick Next unites emerging philanthropic leaders to support innovative solutions in healthcare for women and girls — like using online platforms to reach teens in Central America with sexual and reproductive health information or helping married Ethiopian girls plan their pregnancies and find pathways out of poverty.

Maverick Next members share real-world experiences, learn through hands-on project engagement, and collaborate with a community of experts and thought leaders. Members also attend a curated course that earns them a certificate in Social Impact from the London School of Economics.

Project Spotlight

Before the Husband Engagement session, we never discussed family planning, but after the session we [had a] discussion and even decided together the type of method she should take. Husband Somba Cheka Kebele during prototype testing stage of the Maverick Next “Smart Start”. Ethiopia, 2019

JUMPSTART YOUR LIFE OF PHILANTHROPIC IMPACT

As a cohort, members visit their project in-person to gain a firsthand understanding of project design and implementation. They see challenges in real time, build relationships with project staff, and participate in workshops that enrich their understanding of the work and community. Members also learn through seminars and events that prepare them for a life of meaningful philanthropic impact.

Together, Maverick Next members co-invest in a project within an established PSI program to amplify impact through a “burst of innovation.”

Award Spotlight:
Goalkeepers Accelerator

Our 2018 Maverick Next Members worked in Ethiopia with PSI’s Smart Start— a groundbreaking program co-created with Ethiopian youth to help married adolescent couples delay pregnancy and find pathways out of poverty.

In 2019, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation named Smart Start as one of its three Global Accelerators at the Foundation’s Goalkeepers event. This distinction recognizes the program as an extraordinary initiative that is propelling progress in global health toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
