Reaching Girls With Sexual and Reproductive Health Services Through Schools
2017 - 2021 | Ethiopia
Maverick was my first foray into philanthropy and it was transformative in my life and how I engage with others philanthropically and personally. Maverick really puts gusto behind the phrase "trust-based philanthropy" by putting local leaders at the center of their work globally and really putting authentic trust and faith in their decision making through the human-centered design process. Being able to see that play out in real time reframed my perspective on risk, philanthropy, and activism.Maverick member Erin Samueli
In Ethiopia, an estimated 1 in 3 adolescent girls aged 19 or younger are either pregnant or already parents. Erin Samueli’s Maverick Collective investment used a Human Centered Design (HCD) approach to combat teen pregnancy in Ethiopia by re-imagining how sexual and reproductive health education and services are delivered in schools.
Focused on finding solutions from impacted communities, the project team collaborated with local adolescents to design a school-based family planning (FP) solution to unintended teen pregnancy. Through insights gained from girls and adolescents about how they learn about and access SRH services and products, Population Services International co-created an effective and engaging pilot intervention that saw over a hundred girls in Addis Ababa and Oromia adopt a FP method.
