Last fall, Cristina Stadler Ljungberg spent two weeks traveling across Nepal, hauling deep into the country’s remotest reaches a suitcase filled with, of all things, menstrual supplies. It was somewhere around the middle of September when Ljungberg and her team walked into a school building in Nepalgunj, a western Nepali city that’s tucked along the border with India. The principal ushered the foreign visitors into a small classroom outfitted with simple wooden benches and tables, and a chalkboard up front. Female students joined them in groups of four, with Ljungberg and her team explaining through a translator that they were there to talk about periods.
